• Review: V for Vendetta

I just watched the movie V for Vendetta. I bought the HD-DVD. Well – at first I was a bit confused what was going on. But about 5 minutes into the movie you start to understand. Surveillance, fascism, fear and dictatorship. The whole story plays 30-40 years from now. The surveillance stuff and the fear of terrorism made people vote a dictator like the high chancellor. The trigger for people voting that way was a huge biological terrorist assault. As it turns out later the terrorist assault was planned by the high chancellor to get in power and passing laws that allow a surveillance society. 1984 all over again. One guy who the biological weapon was tested on decided to bring the government down and tells the girl Evey(Natalie Portman) that he’s on a Vendetta. When he was a test subject for this virus he was locked in the cell “V”and that is that guys name. So there you have your movie title “V for Vendetta”. I won’t give you a write up of the plot. You can get that one on the Wikipedia Page. If you haven’t watched the movie yet, read the plot on the wikipedia page or watch the movie. I highly suggest doing the latter.

So did I like it? First of course my lower brain has something to say. :) Natalie Portman is so hot in this movie. Even with the short hair. Now in my head again. :P I really liked that movie. I sat in front of my 24″, my jaw dropped, and just being stunned by some of the scenes. I really think the subject of the movie is an important one. Surveillance. No opposition to the government. I think this movie shows what can happen if you take the surveillance part too far and someone with wrong causes comes in power. If you look in the U.S. and Great Britain. The laws they passed and the declarations some high up government members make you begin to wonder if we are far away from such a scenario. The U.S. allowing torture. All the surveillance stuff. It really makes you think. I don’t think a scenario like the one in the movie will happen in my lifetime. Or better: I hope not.

But enough about the politics. There’s more to the movie than that. There is the amazing setting. Everything is a bit dark and the whole country is depressing. The flashbacks to the times prior to the high chancellor coming into power are mostly bright and friendly. In my eyes the makers are trying to tell us we should be happy with what we have. It could be far worse. And we should protect the freedoms we have or we will end up like this. The visual effects were very subtle and so gave the whole thing more realism than most movies. Of course they obviously didn’t blow up the two buildings in London… Besides the looks there was music. I think the music fit the current scene always and I like the music in the credits too.

Last but not least the actors. I already did Natalie Portman. :D Ok. I did her looks. Her acting was quite good. As she gets out after being held in that cell. Really awesome acting there. V was good too. He was played by the “Agent Smith” guy. Because of the mask one would think it was easier to play. I don’t think so. You can hear emotion and stuff in the voice too. One of my favorite characters was the inspector realizing step by step that his government is a piece of sh*t.

After all I really have two sentences to say: “Jaw dropping movie. Let us not have such a society!”
